Nanyuki men’s handball team head coach, Nancy Owago, is resolute in her pursuit of a podium finish despite their lacklustre performance in the previous season.

The Langata-based squad ended the prior campaign with six victories, no draws, and four losses, accumulating a total of 12 points from their ten matches.

In contrast, the league champions NCPB dominated with an unbeaten record, showcasing their prowess atop the table. With a background as a former player for Ulinzi and the national handball team, Owago is confident her eight years of coaching experience will boost the team.

Despite the setbacks, she remains focused on elevating her team’s standing within the league. “I have been working on the physical aspect. The players’ power has been dwindling and they must be properly equipped,” Owago said.

She also highlighted the importance of physical training to bolster the team’s capabilities. Going forward, Owago has set her sights on integrating the ladies’ team into the league within the next year.

She acknowledged the disparities in coaching between men and women but remained committed to nurturing their development. “I plan to introduce the ladies’ team into the league within a year.”

She revealed: “Coaching women presents unique challenges as they may not progress as rapidly as men, but I am dedicated to building them up.”

Owago emphasised the importance of sponsors in providing essential resources for competitions. She said she has actively engaged potential sponsors who have expressed interest in backing the team.

Beyond her coaching duties, Owago extends her encouragement to school leavers, urging them to embrace sports as a constructive outlet.

“I implore Form Four leavers not to perceive the completion of their schooling as the end of their journey.”

“Engaging in sports during this transitional period not only occupies their time but also nurtures a positive mindset,” Owago emphasised.

She stresses the significance of embracing outcomes in sports, recognising the variability inherent in every match, and the pivotal role of unity in navigating them.

Owago’s unwavering dedication to enhancing her team’s performance and fostering talent in handball is palpable as she maintained to having set her sights on securing a top-three finish in the forthcoming league.
