Tyla Waters has won the Grammys for Best African Music Performance. The South African beauty becomes the first ever to win this category.
The category for best African music performance is one of the three new categories featured at the 2024, Grammys, along with Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording.
The ‘Water’ hitmaker was up against Afrobeats heavyweights Burna Boy, Davido, Asake, Olamide, Ayra Starr, and fellow South African Musa Keys who featured on Davido’s “Unavailable.
I’d never thought I’d say I won a Grammy at 22 years old,” Tyla said as she accepted the award. “Thank you to the Recording Academy for this category it’s so important.” She went on.
Who is Tyla?
Tyla Laura Sethal commonly known as ‘Tyla Waters‘ is a South African singer and songwriter born on 30th January 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her family is of Zulu, Indian, Mauritian, and Irish descent.
The singer who started honing her singing skills at a young age and performed in many talent shows and local shows, got signed with Epic Records, in 2021 after her debut single ‘Getting Late.’
The South African star is popularly known for her hit song ‘Water’, which has spawned many dance challenges on the popular video-sharing app TikTok.
The ‘Water’ song which rose the 22-year-old to fame worldwide has made it to the top 10 on the Billboard US Afro Bats Songs chart, the UK Afrobeat Singles chart, and more.
The song ‘Water’ also got Tyla nominated for the Best Performance Category at the 2024 Grammy leading to her first-ever win in Grammys.
