Sofapaka turn to Zico to salvage season
Sofapaka have confirmed the appointment of Zedekiah 'Zico' Otieno as their new head coach.
This is Zico's first job in the top flight since he left KCB before the season began, and his arrival is understood to have been motivated by Batoto ba Mungu's need to get stabilised after a poor start to the current campaign.
With the appointment of the former Gor Mahia coach, Ezekiel Akwana, who has been in charge since the departure of Francis Harigingo, has been redeployed to the assistant coach position.
"We are pleased to inform our fans, in a bid to boost the squad and the technical bench, we have appointed Zedekiah 'Zico' Otieno to be the head coach of our team and will be assisted by coach Ezekiel Akwana," Sofapaka said in a statement on their social media pages.
The experienced tactician will be unveiled when the Football Kenya Federation Premier League resumes in the new year. Zico's first match in charge will be a duel against Bidco United.
"Zico will officially be unveiled on Sunday during our home match against Bidco United. More news will be updated in the coming days. Karibu sana coach kwa familia," the 2009 Premier League champions said.
With Zico available, Sofapaka have now decided to entrust him with the first team that has accumulated just 14 points from 16 games.
Batoto ba Mungu are the only side that has lost more games; 10 one more than Nzoia Sugar, who are at the bottom of the 18-team table.
