Kenyans Raise Questions as KNEC Returns Varying Results for Some Students: “Hizi Ni Tabia Gani”

 

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu released the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) at a ceremony at Moi Girls High School Eldoret. During the Monday, January 8 ceremony, the CS invited candidates to check for their results through the Kenya National Examination Council's website. "A candidate can also access the individual 2023 KCSE results online through a link on the KNEC website or directly through the URL: https://results.knec.ac.ke you will be required to enter your candidate’s index number and the name(s) as per the registration data for the 2023 KCSE examination," said Machogu. Moments after the announcement, Kenyans took to social media complaining of delays in accessing their results. This seemed to have been rectified, but hours later, a new complaint arose, with candidates pointing out that they had received varied results. How were the results changing? In a post shared on X, Homa Bay Town MP George Peter Kaluma urged parents not to sleep, claiming that results on KNEC's website kept changing. "Parents don't sleep, don't sleep - the results are changing every minute! You blink, it goes to "A"; blink again and it will be "E"," he wrote. How did Kenyans react to changing results His complaints were echoed by other social media users, with the first trial showing a student named Rooney Okuta scoring a B+ before it changed to an A-. At the time of publishing the story, Okuta's mean grade was an A-. " As the new norm, Kenyans took to social media to air out their anger as others accused the Ministry of Education of being incompetent. @Antony Njagi posted: "I initially thought that this post lacked basis. Then I decided to recheck my brother's results, just in case. His results "as per now" are very different from what we received before noon. He has since been re-awarded new grades in Kiswahili & Maths." @Justina Wamae replied: "Aiii hizi ni tabia gani Ministry of Education inafanya? #inatuhusu." @Seneta L E Okari said: "We should be patient and wait for result slips or the school results print-outs. Online things are now jamming." @waitherajb1 opined: "We complained about KCPE . Mkanyamaza . Now it's KCSE ati sijui you're on recess . All you leaders are pathetic and don't care about the children of Kenya!" @asiyahope posted: "Seems it is only affecting the top national schools..sisi was huku chini tuko Sawa tu."  Why Machogu failed to release results for 4k candidates Meanwhile, the CS said the ministry would not release the results of over 4,000 students due to irregularities. "The results of the remaining 4,109 candidates who were suspected to have engaged in examination irregularities have been withheld pending the completion of investigations into their cases," he said. Machogu reported instances of irregularities occurring at multiple examination centres during the exam administration.
