Arati warns rich families against taking bursaries

Kisii Governor Simba Arati has told rich people not to apply for the Ward Bursary Fund for their children, warning that they will not be awarded.

He asked chiefs, pastors and members of community policing to help identify orphaned and children from impoverished families to benefit from the kitty.

He urged the learners in form two, three and four to pick forms from the offices of their respective ward representatives, fill and return them to the officers for scrutiny.

Arati said students joining Form one and those in Vocational Training Centres will fill the forms at the end of the month, stressing that only deserving learners will qualify for the bursary.
Increased bursary

“The county government has increased the bursary from Sh135 million to Sh225 million per year. Each ward will get Sh5 million, up from Sh3 million per year,” Arati said after he graced the ushering in of the New Year at Nyanturago stadium, Nyaribari Chache constituency.

Meanwhile, Education Executive Committee Member Daniel Ondabu said that bursary forms are being printed and urged parents to be patient.

He gave the assurance after several parents flocked ward offices to pick the forms, only to be turned away.

At Nyatieko ward, the MCA, Cosmas Oyagi said more than 1,000 parents turned up at his office for the forms.

Separately, Kisii County Assembly Deputy Speaker, Jacob Bagaka said the bursaries will enable the government to realise 100 percent transition from primary to secondary schools.
