Amos Kimunya Recounts How His Wife Lucy Helped Him Become Who He Is: "We'll Miss You Dearly"
Former Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya is mourning his wife, Lucy, whom he described as his key pillar. Former Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya (right) said his wife Lucy passed away on Tuesday, January 30, at the Nairobi Hospital. The heartbroken former legislator, who lost his reelection bid in the August 2022 elections, disclosed that his wife was receiving care at the Nairobi Hospital. He did not disclose how long his beloved wife was in the hospital or what was ailing her. "It is with deep sorrow and humble acceptance of God’s will that I wish to announce that this Tuesday at 3:00 am, my dear wife Lucy went to be with the Lord while receiving care at Nairobi Hospital," Kimunya posted on Facebook. Kimunya was elected to the Central Kipipiri Constituency in 2002. In 2023, when former president the late Mwai Kibaki created his cabinet, he appointed him the Lands Minister. Amos Kimunya's political career In 2006, Kimunya was appointed Finance Minister after his predecessor, David Mwiraria, resigned after being implicated in a fictitious passport printing scandal, the Anglo-Leasing. Kimunya's appointment to the Finance Ministry happened in February 2006. Kibaki reappointed Kimunya as the Finance Minister in 2007 after the former was sworn in as the president in a contested presidential result that resulted in post-election violence. Like his predecessor, Kimunya was forced to resign over the controversial sale of the Grand Regency Hotel after the National Assembly censured him. Kimunya must go He was under siege from politicians like the former Ikolomani MP and current Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale. Kimunya, an accountant by profession, was once a club captain of Muthaiga Golf Club and was among Kibaki's inner circle team, credited with a tremendous economic turnaround after former president Daniel Arap Moi's tenure. Among other credits, Kimunya is remembered for leading Kibaki's privatization programme that saw the sale of 51% of Telkom Kenya to France Telkom and directing Kenya's biggest offering, giant telco Safaricom. Amos Kimunya's success While eulogising his wife, Kimunya said that he could not have achieved what he has been able to if it were not for the support from his wife, who breathed her last on Tuesday, January 30. He said Lucy contributed immensely to his personal growth and rise in the political sphere. "She was a key pillar in my personal and political life; she contributed immensely to making our society greener through various initiatives and supporters of the youth and women. Go well, our dear Lucy, we will miss you dearly," Kimunya said. Kimunya unsuccessfully contested the Kipipiri MP seat on a Jubilee Party of Kenya under the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party.
