The family of Nicole Nyamoita is yet to come to terms with the tragic death of the 17-year-old. Kisii Girl Killed by Speeding Pickup Was Preparing for University after Scoring B+ in KCSE, Family Nyamoita died alongside her friend Ivy Kerubo in a terrible accident at Daraja-Moja along the Kisii-Keroka Highway on Friday, January 26. Family’s only hope Citizen TV reports that she was slated to join the university later this year after posting remarkable results in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination. She scored an overall mean grade of B+(plus) having written the national test at Kisumu Girls High School. According to her family, the deceased was expected to elevate her family after showing impressive prospects in academics. “I was called and informed that Nicole was among the fatalities in the Daraja-Moja accident. We knew our lives would change and the stars had already aligned for us,” said Eunice Mokeira, the deceased’s grandmother. Nicole and Ivy were coming from the Kisii Ajiry Centre at the Gusii Stadium, where they had attended lessons. Failed brakes at Daraja-Moja, Kisii Witnesses at the scene revealed a pickup ferrying building materials failed in its brakes and rammed into them at the spot where they were engaging a boda boda rider. Nicole died on the spot, with Ivy dying while on her way to the hospital.  The boda boda rider who sustained severe injuries was admitted to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital. “They were bargaining with a boda boda rider before going to Bobaracho but the driver was trying to negotiate the same bend to Bobaracho, and that is how it rammed into them,” one of the eye-witnesses shared. Kisii county police commander Charles Keses confirmed the accident. The locals called on the authorities to refurbish the road as the scene had become a black spot in the recent past. To console the bereaved was Governor Simba Arati, who hinted at upgrading the road. “I am deeply saddened to convey my heartfelt sympathy to the families of the victims of the terrible accident that occurred at Kisii Daraja-Moja. May the Lord give strength and comfort to the bereaved families and intervene in occasioning quick recovery for the injured…It’s sad that the Daraja- Moja stretch has been a black-spot and the upgrade of the highway is long overdue,” he said.
