Where women are firmly steering security docket

After witnessing politically scintillating tussle over ownership between Nyandarua and Laikipia counties, Nyahururu is now making history as a town whose security team is under women.

Nyahururu sub-county has only two men holding senior positions in police and prisons administration while the rest of top security jobs are firmly in the hands of women.

This has earned the town the moniker “Igwamiti Girls”, a name coined by Igwamiti Ward MCA Irene Wachuka.

Some of the tops post under women leadership are Deputy County Commissioner (Ann Kerubo), Jackline Gitari (Sub-County Police Commander previously known as OCPD), DCIO (Emily Njeri), Nyahururu Police station (Beatrice Wambugu) and Catherine Mutebei heads the Nyahururu Women’s Prison.

Critical Infrastructure

The only senior men in the Sub County security management team are Robinson Butasi who is the Critical Infrastructure Police Unit (CIPU) head and Charles Mutebei who is in charge of Nyahururu main prison.

Though holding the security posts, the women spiced their Jamhuri Day speeches with motherly love and the DCC has warned that that will not water down their resolve to deal with local security challenges.

“You know the ladies are hardworking and resolute when dealing with issues,” Kerubo said.
The administrator said among the issues they deal with firmly is illicit brews, drugs and rampant petty crimes like break-ins and stealing of chicken.

The head of women prison, in her part, urged families to be seek alternative means of resolving disputes instead of going to courts.

“It is painful to see a woman carrying a small child in prison. I urge families to be using alternative ways of resolving disputes to avoid such scenarios,” she said.
