RIP: Idol East Africa star Eric Moyo collapses on stage, dies days later
The gospel music community is in mourning following the sudden and tragic passing of renowned artist Eric Moyo.
The 42-year-old singer, a vibrant member of the esteemed group Joyous Celebration, reportedly succumbed to a brain bleed after collapsing on stage during a performance in South Africa.
The incident, which unfolded on December 14, shocked fans and fellow artists alike. Witnesses described the heartbreaking scene as Moyo collapsed midway through the performance, leaving the audience in disbelief.
Swift medical response teams rushed to the scene to provide emergency assistance. Despite their immediate efforts to revive him, Moyo was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The cause of his sudden collapse and subsequent brain bleed is currently under investigation.
Joyous Celebration founding member Jabu Hlongwane expressed a deep sense of loss in a statement released on December 20.
“This is not a good feel, and we are shocked,” Hlongwane said.
He highlighted Moyo’s significant contribution to the choir, noting his unique talent that brought a Zimbabwean flavor to their performances.
In a statement released by Joyous Celebration Family, they revealed that Moyo was discovered by another founding member, Lindelani Mkhize, in 2014.
Moyo, as a tenor singer, brought joy to many with his electric performances and unique songs. The statement emphasised Moyo’s unmatched stage presence and stylish attire, leaving an indelible mark on the gospel music genre.
“While we mourn his passing, let’s celebrate his life and the impact he had on those around him. Eric may no longer be with us, but his spirit will live on through the beautiful music he created,” the statement read.
Joyous Celebration Family is in communication with Moyo’s family and plans to share information regarding funeral arrangements on their social media platforms as soon as it becomes available.
Eric Moyo’s musical journey began with his victory in Idols East Africa, a triumph that catapulted him to superstardom. The Zimbabwean singer, who was also part of the talent search show A-Academy in 2006, joined Joyous Celebration in 2014 after being scouted for several years.
