Matatu tout arrested over lack of uniform dies in remand
A tout who was arrested in a police operation and remanded at Industrial Area Remand for not wearing a uniform died in hospital after complaining of chest pain.
Simon Maina was arrested on November 15, 2023, for another offence of not wearing a PSV badge.
After his arrest and arraignment, he pleaded not guilty and was remanded at the Industrial Area for failing to pay his cash bail.
Officials said he later fell sick two days later and was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital where he succumbed on November 17 evening.
But prison authorities reported the matter to police on Tuesday, December 5 evening at the Capitol Hill police station.
The body has been lying at the hospital mortuary since then.
A postmortem is planned on the body to establish the cause of his death.
Officials say many petty offenders are suffering in jails for lack of cash bail or wrong charges.
Officials say prisons are struggling with congestion that has been exacerbated by too many petty offenders among the inmates.
There are plans to let go from custody more than 4,000 petty offenders to decongest the current population of 53, 438 prisoners.
Man's body found near Nairobi National Park
In another incident, police are investigating the death of a man whose body was found near the fence of the Nairobi National Park along Mombasa Road.
The body had blood oozing from the mouth when it was discovered, police said.
It had visible injuries and there were also blood stains on the nose and ears meaning he may have been beaten up to death.
Police later identified him as David Kivosyo. This was done through identification documents found on him.
A team has been set up to investigate the Monday night murder.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and investigation
