Lady who complained of extreme bloating found to be 23 weeks pregnant

A woman who was suffering from painful menses was stunned after it was found that she was 23 weeks pregnant.

According to Mail Online, the woman, aged 37, went to doctors complaining of pain in her abdomen that lasted 10 days — as well as bloating that had gradually gotten worse.

Scans revealed a 'normally-formed' fetus was growing in her abdominal cavity — the space between the stomach and the bowel.

Known as an ectopic pregnancy, the medical phenomenon is almost always bad for the baby. But doctors were able to deliver the baby at 29 weeks and within three months, both mother and baby were discharged, the report read.

The case was revealed in the New England Journal of Medicine according to the magazine. Doctors diagnosed her with an ectopic pregnancy, a type of pregnancy outside the uterus - which occurs in the fallopian tubes.

The baby was in the peritoneal cavity, or the area that holds vital organs, with the placenta attached to the top of the pelvis.

Doctors said these pregnancies are rare but possible if the fetus starts growing in the fallopian tubes - which carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus - or the ovaries.

Over time, these can rupture - allowing the fetus to 'escape' into the cavity. The probability of death for the fetus is over 90 percent.
