El Nino: 10 People Killed, over 24k Displaced as Floods Ravage Coastal Counties

How many people have been displaced by El Nino? Coastal Regional Commissioner Rodah Onyancha said that Tana River county was the most affected in terms of displacement of residents. “Across the region, the most affected county is Tana River County, with 5136 households that have been displaced. In fact, in Tana River, I am talking about displacement because we are moving people to higher grounds,” said Onyancha. The regional commissioner disclosed that Mombasa and Kwale have recorded three deaths, while Kilifi and Tana River have recorded two deaths due to the ongoing floods. "In the last three days, Kwale has been affected across the counties. We have 680 families affected, and we have three deaths. Most of the displaced communities are along the road because much of the farmland has been affected by the overflow from Tana River," She added. Red Cross numbers According to Michael Ayabei, the Head of Disaster Management at the Kenya Red Cross, 58,132 people have been affected by the floods, of whom 24,928 have been displaced.  Out of this, at least 24928 have been displaced, and unfortunately, these figures seem to be growing by the day," Ayabei said. 2 KRA officials missing in Kwale county Meanwhile, the whereabouts of two Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officers remain unknown after flash floods in River Ramisi, Kwale county, swept away a vehicle they were travelling in. The officers were travelling to Mombasa from Lunga Lunga during the incident. KRA acting southern region coordinator Lawrence Siele said a multi-agency security team was working closely to search for the two officers. In a statement to newsrooms, Siele indicated that KRA is working round the clock to ensure the security of its offices, and it has already notified the families of the victims about the incident. Siele further said that their family, KRA staff, and members of the public will be updated about the rescue mission.
