Asali ya Wazee! Government bans sexual enhancement medicine made from Honey
The sale and distribution of Therma Epimedyumlu Macun, a famous honey-based pharmaceutical used for sexual enhancement, has been prohibited by the government.
The product, known commonly as 'Asali ya Wazee,' is widely available in Kenya and has been pushed for its supposed sexual enhancement effects.
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) announced the ban on Tuesday after conducting extensive tests and detecting significant adulteration of the product with high levels of Sildenafil, a conventional active pharmaceutical ingredient used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
PPB further stated that Sildenafil is a prescription-only medication, and that excessive intake poses safety and health risks.
"The PPB strongly cautions the public against use or involvement in the trade, distribution, wholesale, retail, issuance or dispensing of this product. Any person found dealing with or distributing these products will be subjected to legal action," reads a statement dated November 21, 2023.
Furthermore, the board issued a public warning concerning batches of counterfeit and subpar Truvada products circulating in the Kenyan market. The products in question are Gilead Science Inc.'s Truvada 200mg and 300mg.
The board further stated that the products are being sold illegally since they did not match the approved marketing permission requirement, as indicated by false packaging and labeling.
As a result, the public is advised not to use product batches B4033894D and B425875D since their safety, quality, and efficiency cannot be guaranteed.
