Portland Cement puts up more land for sale amidst demolitions

The East African Portland Cement (EAPC Plc) has now put up more land for sale to members of the public amidst the ongoing demolitions on their disputed land in Athi River.

EAPC said priority will be given to individuals currently occupying the land put up for sale.

The company asked the current occupants to state their claim within 14 days beginning Tuesday, October 17.

"East African Portland Cement (EAPC Plc) wishes to notify members of the public of its offer to sell the above-referenced parcels of land via a regularization model," the notice published on October 17 reads.

"At the expiry of this notice, all unclaimed portions shall be competitively offered to the general public on a willing buyer willing seller basis."

In a notice seen by the Star, the land put up for sale in Mavoko is registered under LR NO. 8784/144, 145 and 653.

The land on offer, however, is not part of the disputed land where demolitions have been ongoing since Friday. The disputed land is registered LR NO. 10424.

Portland Cement said they had set office on the land put up for sale to facilitate transactions.

The announcement comes even as the controversial sale of the 4,298 acres of land (LR NO. 10424) has now seen hundreds of families left in the cold.

This was after a Machakos High Court declared East African Portland Cement PLC the legitimate owner of the land located within Athi River in Mavoko, Machakos County.

This followed a legal suit No. 74 of 2014 filed at Machakos Environment and Lands Court by some individuals, and officials of Aimi Ma Lukenya Society against the cement grinder on the said land’s ownership dispute in 2014.

It also emerged that the East Africa Portland Cement Company had in a Facebook post on June 15, 2016, warned the unsuspecting members of the public against buying the said land cautioning that the said parcels were not for sale.

On Monday, however, lawyer Nelson Havi announced that he will represent homeowners evicted from Athi River land in a tussle with East Africa Portland Cement Company.

"Due to public demand, I will act for all the homeowners evicted from the property of East African Portland. Compile the documents pursuant to which you bought the property, get a valuation report of the land and developments, and get in touch with me for further action," Havi said on X.   BY THE STAR
