I'm firmly in ODM and Azimio, Lenku says despite association with Ruto

Kajiado Governor Joseph ole Lenku has insisted that he remains a proud member of the Orange Democratic Movement party.

Speaking on Sunday during an interdenominational prayer service attended by Azimio leader Raila Odinga, Lenku said he is not ashamed of his association with the Opposition outfit.

He noted that Azimio contributed a lot to his re-election in the August 2022 general election and he is happy to associate with them.

Lenku said Raila, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua all took time out of their busy schedules to campaign for him, and he is grateful for that.

"I'm very proud being an ODM governor and Azimio la Umoja. We have no shame because it is the truth. Our coalition contributed a lot to my re-election and I thank Raila Odinga, Karua and Kalonzo for campaigning for me," he said, amid cheers from the congregation.

"I am happy to associate with you."

Lenku's remarks come despite previously committing to work with President William Ruto's administration against the Azimio coalition's directive.

The Kajiado governor in January said elections were in the past now and went on to declare unwavering support for Ruto.

The second term governor said although they were in different camps while in the 'forest to look for God's grace”, time had come to join hands to build the country.

“We will join other Kenyans as the Maa nation to work with your government...this is the time to build the country,” Lenku said.

The governor insisted that the future of the country will not be built through political affiliation, but by leaders working together.

In June, Lenku called out the Opposition for leading anti-government protests.

He insisted that it was time Ruto and Raila met and talked for the sake of peace and stability in the country.

“There is no more room for anarchy. My President William Ruto and my party leader, Raila Odinga, should now call for a ceasefire. We have a country to build together," Lenku said.

He said it was time Kenyans worked together and helped each other for survival purposes in the current situation when the cost of living has soared.    BY THE STAR
