Brian Mwenda presents himself at DCI offices
Brian Mwenda, a young man accused of masquerading as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya has presented himself at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Offices.
According to a statement shared by Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Eric Theuri, the DCI have sufficient against Mwenda who faces several cases of forgery and identity theft
Theuri also noted that the LSK was cooperating with the DCI to conduct thorough and extensive investigations and ensure that Mwenda was prosecuted. This, according to the LSK boss, will serve as an example for future masqueraders.
"Brian Mwenda Njagi is now at DCI. We are going to ensure that he faces the full force of the Law. The evidence gathered so far points to several cases of forgery & identity theft. Further inquiries are ongoing. We are working closely with the DCI team to conduct thorough & extensive investigations. This case will be a deterrent for future masqueraders," Theuri wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) platform.
Mwenda busted
Mwenda sparked debate after the LSK revealed that he was impersonating another advocate identified as Brian Mwenda Ntwiga through a fraud scheme dubbed Business Email Compromise (BEC).
In the probe conducted by the law body, Ntwiga confirmed that he had not applied for a practising certificate since his admission to the bar in August 2022.
"It was only until sometime in September 2023 when he attempted to log in to the system and activate his profile with the intention of applying for his practising certificate that he realized he could not access his LSK portal.
"He promptly alerted the ICT personnel at the Secretariat vide an email on the 28th September 2023, who upon inquiry noted that the details in the system, more particularly his email address did not belong to him hence the reason why he could not access his Membership portal," LSK stated.
The law body also revealed that Mwenda had contacted them explaining that he was experiencing difficulties accessing his account in the portal to which the LSK responded by removing Ntwiga's email address and replacing it with Mwenda's.
Despite the changes, Mwenda was still unable to pay for a practising certificate as he was required to present crucial documents that he didn't have,
"The LSK has commissioned an immediate review of the established protocols on change of membership credentials to enhance the internal approval mechanisms," Theuri stated then. BY K24 NEWS
