5 stitches that are easy to use at home

People hear the word stitch and find it complicated especially when you have a toned or torn cloth.

A stitch is a loop of thread that results from a single movement of a needle in sewing, knitting, and crocheting.

Did you know that you can do a stitch at home that will look professional even without having tailor skills? all you need is a needle and a thread.

All you have to do is master your fabric's texture so you can know which stitch to use. Here are simple stitches that you can do at home;

1. Back Stitch

This stitch is mostly used in emergencies because it is fast to sew.

The stitch can be used for decorative and functional purposes and it is used to add strength to the fabric and definition.

Tutorial: put your thread on the needle and make a tail on one end while the other you tie a knot. You can also choose not to use a knot and sew the needle in the fabric and leave a bit of tail on the bottom side which will be used to anchor the pattern.

Pull the thread and make a loop to make it tighter and do it repeatedly until the end of the. When stitching is done, trim any excess thread left.

2. Zig zag stitches

A zigzag stitch is a type of stitch that goes back and forth in a zigzag pattern. It’s often used to secure two pieces of fabric together or to add some extra strength to a seam.

They can also be used to create decorative borders or patterns on fabric and also used to finish stitches.

All you need to do is do a zig-zag pattern while sewing. An example of zig-zag is like the ones found in blankets and under skirts.

3. Chain Stitches

Chain stitches are also called linked stitches because they are created by linking a series of single stitches together. This makes them very sturdy, which is why they are often used for seams and hems.

Tutorial;  First make a loop with the thread and hold it between your thumb and first finger. Then, insert the needle into the loop and pull the thread through. Repeat this process to create a chain of stitches.

When you are finished, tie a knot in the thread to secure it.

4. Running Stitches

This is the easiest of all the stitches and is mostly used for functional purposes.

With a needle and thread tie a knot at the end of your thread to avoid your thread un attended to.

Tutorial: Start sewing doing equal stitches on each side of the fabric, and loop until you are done then do a back stitch for firmness.   BY MPASHO NEWS
