Usually, roasted maize in Kenya is sold at an average price of 30 to 50 shillings. But in the United Arab Emirates that is different.
CNN reporter Larry Madowo was stunned after being sold roasted maize for about 740 shillings in Dubai.
Madowo, who reports from different parts of the world for the CNN news organization based in the United States, was in Dubai and on Saturday uploaded a picture of himself eating roasted maize in the prestigious city.
To the surprise of many, Madowo revealed that he bought the roasted maize for 5 dollars which is equivalent to about 740 Kenyan shillings.
Despite roasted maize being expensive in Dubai, he said that he had to buy one because it is something that is in his blood and he cannot go past roasted maize without feeling wanting to eat it.
“The villager in me cannot walk past 🌽, even in Dubai. This cost almost $5 😳” Madowo said while enjoying the roasted maize.
Some of his fans were surprised by the expensive price, saying that in this country we cry and argue in vain about the cost of living, the fact that maize like that is only 50 shillings!
“You mean seven hundred and fifty shillings? Maize for 30 bob here in Eld,” Jael Kiprotich wanted to find out the real truth.
“Just the other day I was in Dubai and bought the same for $7! The price has really come down. Maybe it’s the harvest season,” Muhatia Dominic said.
“The villager in me will not be convinced to buy that at that price. My elders will never forgive me,” Idrissa Rogers said.
“It seems you are also paying for a clean environment 😅 We don’t give even that KES 50 just like that,” Linnet Nafula joked. BY MPASHO NEWS
