The guilty are afraid, Karua responds after 'Chebukati Three' snubbed talks team

Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has responded after former IEBC Commissioners 'Chebukati Three' failed to appear to make submissions at the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO).

The three include former IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati, and ex-commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu.

In her response, Karua insisted that they failed to appear before the talks because they were guilty and therefore afraid.

"The guilty are afraid," Karua said in a tweet.

They were scheduled to appear before NADCO on Thursday at around noon.

The Chebukati Three in a statement said that participating in the dialogue talks would be a reward for impunity.

"We won't be appearing before the National Dialogue Committee to discuss issues that have been resolved. With tremendous respect to the Committee, our participation in the talks would be an unmitigated betrayal to the IEBC Staff who were tortured and murdered," he said.

"Instead a Commission of Inquiry should be formed."

They added that after the inquiry, appropriate punishment should be meted out to those responsible.

Chebukati highlighted that the outcome of such an inquiry will bolster the independence of IEBC and ensure that it maintains the stature contemplated in the Constitution.

Chebukati explained that the commission should be set up to investigate the unfortunate incidences of August 15, 2022, at Bomas of Kenya which according to him brought the image of Kenya into disrepute.

The other former Commissioners led by former vice chair Jualiana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, Justus Nyang'aya, and Irene Masit appeared before the committee to make their submissions from 2 pm.

In a presentation to the committee, the Cherera Four said they were forced to quit after they questioned the process that led to the declaration of presidential results.

Cherera and Masit made their submissions virtually. They said they were forced to flee from the country after receiving threats over their actions.

The four commissioners rejected the presidential results announced by Chebukati on August 15, 2022, claiming the final tallying of the results was marred with discrepancies and irregularities.

"It was the commission to tally and the chair (Chebukati) to declare the results. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to do that," Wanderi, who was accompanied by Nyang'aya when making the presentation, told the committee.

Wanderi added all commissioners were required to sign form 34 C, which had a summary of presidential results from all constituencies, but the form was never availed to them.

"What we got was a form containing a summary of the results from all counties," he added.  BY THE STAR
