Happy birthday! Google marks 25 years since its launch in 1998

Search engine Google is celebrating 25 years since its launch on September 27, 1998.

On its platform, Google has replaced the double letter ‘oo’ with the number ‘25’ to celebrate its anniversary.

Google was officially launched by American computer scientists Larry Page and Sergey Brin to market Google Search.

Over the years, it has become one of the most used web-based search engines.

The current Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai took to his X account on Wednesday to appreciate Google users around the world.

“Happy 25th birthday Google. Thanks to everyone who uses our products and challenges us to keep innovating and to all Googlers,” Pichai said.

In its blog, the giant search engine thanked Google users for using it for the past 25 years.

“Today’s Doodle celebrates Google’s 25th year. And while here at Google we’re oriented towards the future, birthdays can also be a time to reflect. Let’s take a walk down memory lane to learn how we were born 25 years ago,” Google wrote.

“Much has changed since 1998 including our logo as seen in today’s Doodle — but the mission has remained the same: to organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. Billions of people from all over the globe use Google to search, connect, work, play, and so much more.

“Thank you for evolving with us over the past 25 years. We can’t wait to see where the future takes us, together.”

Owned by an American multinational technology company Google LLC focuses on artificial intelligence, online advertising, search engine technology, cloud computing, computer software, quantum computing, e-commerce and consumer electronics.

According to substack.com, Google has nine products with over one billion monthly active users.

The products include; Google Search, Android, Chrome, Gmail, Google Drive, Google Maps, Google Play Store, YouTube and Google Photos.

Recently, Google noted that search interest in Artificial Intelligence has risen in Kenya, with a focus on jobs dominating the space.

The tech firm said people have searched for AI more than ever this year.

It indicated that the numbers have risen by 270 per cent since last year, and by 400 per cent in the past five years.

"The dominating job-related searches have so far increased by over 5,000 per cent,” Google said in part.

The second most sought niche was AI in relation to Curriculum Vitae (CV) building. It increased by 1,150 per cent.

The trends also showed that Kenyans are increasingly interested in building their careers and learning new skills.    BY THE STAR
