Toilet attendant in court for allegedly stealing woman's purse

A toilet attendant who allegedly stole a handbag from a woman who had left it with him to relieve herself has been charged before a Nairobi court.

Lewis Njuguna, 21, was accused of stealing Nyambura Maina's handbag immediately after she entered a public toilet at Khoja Bus Stage along Tom Mboya Street, Nairobi.

Njuguna is said to have stolen a handbag and an Infinix phone worth Sh 28,000 on July 31.

According to the prosecution records, Njuguna called Nyambura who was passing by in town and asked if they could talk.

Police said Njuguna and Nyambura had allegedly met before and seemed like friends.

Nyambura told police she was escorting her sister for an interview in the CBD on that particular day.

After leaving her sister,  she received a call from Njuguna, who asked her to meet him on the stage.

They then reunited at the stage, but Nyambura stated that she was pressed and needed to go to the washroom.

She left the handbag with him which had her phone and other personal items.

When she returned from the washroom, she found Njuguna had disappeared.

She tried calling him on both his and her phone, but she couldn't reach him since he had turned both of them off.

A report was made at the Central police station and after investigations,  the accused was traced at Kingeero market, in Wangige where he was arrested.

He denied the charges before Milimani chief magistrate Susan Shitubi and was released on a cash bail of 20,000 or a bond of Sh50,000.

The case will be mentioned on August 21.    BY THE STAR
