‘There’s no sufficient ground that would cause my resignation’ – CS Namwamba tells parliament

Sports and Youth Affairs Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba stated on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, that there is not enough evidence that would cause him to step down from his position.

This he said during his appearance at the National Assembly where he was summoned over athletes' welfare amid criticism from a section of MPs.

Responding to Kajiado Central Member of Parliament Elijah Memusi on whether he is willing to resign based on issues raised, Ababu termed himself an exemplary performer in the Sports docket.

"I believe there is absolutely no sufficient ground for my resignation. I have no doubts in my mind, work, or imagination that I am performing well as a Cabinet Secretary for Youths and Sports," the CS stated.

Further, the Sports minister retaliated that while the lawmakers hold his ministry accountable they should also focus on sports federations in the country.

Ababu elaborated on existing tussles between his ministry and federations that have for long been seen as government interference. According to him these misunderstandings eventually hurt the athletes the most.

"I am fully in touch and in control of this ministry, however, this is a public institution and cannot be run as a one-man show. I share responsibilities with two principal secretaries, technical officers and other stakeholders. Federations too play a critical role in the management of sports.

"If we want to improve sports in this country, oversight ministry but don't close your eyes to federations. Let us make federations accountable."    BY K24 NEWS
