Governor Mbarire refutes claims that infants at Embu Level Five Hospital died due to power outage

 

Embu governor Cecily Mbarire has come out to set the record straight about allegations that over 5 babies lost their lives at Embu Level Five Hospital after the nationwide power outage.

In a statement shared via her official Facebook account, Mbarire refuted the claims terming them as misleading and non-factual.

She explained that data from the hospital disclosed that only one baby who was born prematurely died due to complications that were not related to the power outage.

This, according to the statement is out of the 20 babies that were delivered on the specific day. Out of those, eight were born through caesarean section.

Mbarire went on to state that the hospital has five functional backup generators that enhance smooth operations.

The county boss subsequently urged members of the public to ignore and disregard the information.

"Data from the Erribu Level 5 hospital (attached) shows that regrettably, only one(1) premature baby (born at 21 weeks) succumbed in the last 48 hours. There were 20 401100Hes among them 8 C/Ss. All the babies are in absolute good health.

"The hospital has Uve(S) standby generators which are functional and therefore the country-wide power blackout did not interfere with operations. The public is therefore advised to ignore and disregard such misleading and alarming posts that are not backed by facts," she wrote.

Cecily's response followed after she met sharp criticism from quarters across social media platforms.

At the time, the netizens called out the governor and the hospital management accusing them of negligence after a Twitter user announced that he had lost his baby on Saturday morning after the hospital was plunged into darkness due to the power outage.

The Twitter user also revealed that more than three babies had died at the facility because the management failed to turn on the backup generators.

The user's sentiments were backed by well-known human rights activist Boniface Mwangi who called on Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Susan Nakhumicha and Mbarire to take action.    BY PD.CO.KE
