Ex-Kenyan MP reveals son’s admission to Borussia Dortmund football academy

 

Former Cherang'any Member of Parliament Wesley Korir has revealed that his son has joined the famed Borussia Dortmund football academy.

Korir, a 2012 Boston Marathon champion, shared photos of his son with his teammates at Borussia Dortmund International Academy Waterloo.

'Next step'

"Off to the next step in his talent development. Thanks to all for your advice. Identification, nurturing, and monetization of talent are always the way to go," Korir said in a statement.

The BVB Academy

The Borussia Dortmund Academy is one of the recognised centres of talent recognition in the world. Based in Canada, the academy states it represents one of the greatest systems of player development and player pathways in the world.  

"We are deeply honoured and carry a tremendous responsibility to train, communicate, and educate our players and families in the Dortmund Way.

Korir's track record

Korir, who is married to Canadian runner Tarah McKay, who is his former teammate on the Louisville track and field team, established his name as a long-distance runner before he ventured into politics and served Cherang'any Constituency for one term between 2013 and 2017.

He won the Boston Marathon in 2012 after running for two hours, 12 minutes, and 40 seconds. Previously, Korir won the Los Angeles Marathon in 2009 and 2010, which was the first back-to-back record in eight years.

The 2012 Boston Marathon victory remains Korir's most significant achievement, as he emerged as the winner despite the extreme heat that claimed many of the pre-race favorites, including his compatriot Geoffrey Mutai.

Mutai had run the fastest marathon ever during the 2011 Boston event, only to falter as Korir won.

Although Korir made his name as a runner, his son has chosen a different sporting discipline, and given the family's sporting history, the youngster will attract considerable attention in his development path.   BY PEOPLE'S   DAILY
