Accountant charged with conspiracy to defraud Mwalimu Sacco Ksh937K

A former employee of Mwalimu National Sacco was on Friday, August 11, 2023, charged with conspiracy to defraud the financial institution of Ksh937,000.

James Kori Waithanji, jointly with another who did not appear before court, allegedly committed the offence on diverse dates between June 14, 2021, and December 5, 2022, at an unknown place within the country.

He further faced other counts of false accounting and stealing.

The prosecution told the court that on the said dates at Mwalimu National Sacco headquarters in Nairobi, the accountant with intent to defraud made a false debit entry of Ksh937,000.

He denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochoi.

The defence council requested the court to be lenient on bond terms by citing that the accused person is currently unemployed and a single father.

"My client is a single father without a job and he is willing to comply with orders which the court will set in appearing before court," the lawyer said.

He further told the court that the accused person presented himself before court and will not jump bail.

The magistrate freed the suspect on a Ksh500,000 bond or alternative cash bail of Ksh300,000.

The case will be mentioned on August 25 for pre-trial.
