The pharmaceuticals regulator has prohibited the sale and use of vaginal detox products known as Yoni pearls.
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board in a statement on Monday said the products also referred to as herbal tampons, cleansing pearls, or vaginal pearls are not registered and licenced for use in the country.
“The PPB notifies the public that Yoni pearls is neither registered nor authorised for use in Kenya as required under the pharmacy and poisons Act Cap 244,” PPB CEO Fred Siyoi said.
“Therefore their usage poses potential health risks as the PPB cannot guarantee their quality safety and efficacy,” Siyoi said.
“In light of this, PPB strongly advices against the distribution, supply, sale or use of the aforementioned product and any other unregistered products with similar claims.”
PPB has further called on the public and healthcare providers to report any suspicious health products and technologies to the board through the website or the USSD code *271#.
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board is the Drug Regulatory Authority established under the Pharmacy and Poisons Act, Chapter 244 of the Laws of Kenya.
The Board regulates the practice of pharmacy and the manufacture and trade of drugs and poisons.
It aims to implement the appropriate regulatory measures to achieve the highest standards of safety, efficacy and quality for all drugs, chemical substances and medical devices.
These include those locally manufactured, imported, exported, distributed, sold, or used, to ensure the protection of the consumer as envisaged by the laws regulating drugs in force in Kenya. BY THE STAR
