Police arrest two girls for setting dormitory ablaze

Two students from St Mary’s Girls Thigio secondary school in Limuru have been arrested as detectives investigate the Saturday night inferno that destroyed one dormitory.

No one was hurt among the 236 students and staff.

Ndeiya sub county director of education Kariuki Mwangion on Tuesday  said the two students were picked at the school by  DCI officers who are interrogating them.

He said the school’s board of management has decided to close the school until further notice due to extensive damage.

“The school principal will inform parents when to send students back," he said.

The property includes books, bedding, mattresses, clothing and personal effects, as well as structural damage.

MP John Kiraguvisited the school to donate 250 mattresses.

Kiragu said his office will work with the school’s BOM and the Ministry of Education so ensure learning resumes swiftly.

“After all, the syllabus has to be covered before the exams are sat. We have to sit down and work out a plan so as to help the students and the Form 4 candidates sit for their finals," he said.

The legislator also urged the school to improve the security surveillance to prevent damages in the future.

“The school management needs to visit other boarding schools and learn how they have kept watch over the whole school. They can spot everything that is being done in all corners,” he said.    BY THE STAR
