At least 1000 orphans in Marsabit to benefit from scholarship programme
At least 1000 orphans in Marsabit County are set to benefit from a scholarship programme being undertaken by a Non-governmental organisation, the American Relief Agency for the Horn of Africa.
The NGO will support orphaned children in a bid to empower them to reach their goals in life.
The program was launched by county women representative Naomi Jillo Wako on Friday.
The sponsorship programme will provide economic support to children who have lost one or both parents and cater for their school fees besides food and clothing.
The programme which strives to alleviate primary caregivers will also allow orphaned children like those from unstable families to pursue their education.
Wako noted that providing targeted resources to orphans children was critical for improving their well-being.
"The project will use a sustainable and family-centred approach to meet the basic needs of orphans and vulnerable children," she said
The Deputy majority whip thanked the charitable organisation for identifying marsabit county as one of the beneficiaries of the project.
She said the project will be a big help to single parents, particularly mothers who are working against the odds to ensure their children are well-taken care of.
"Children are the world's most valuable resource and its brightest future hope. These children who have lost one or both of their parents are like flowers without a gardener to protect them," she said.
Halima Abdi, a single mother from Moyale, expressed her appreciation to the NGO and county women's representative for a scholarship program that is set to benefit orphaned children.
" I don't know what to say but to appreciate the efforts of our women representative and NGO for the scholarship programme," she said
Halima said the scholarship programme will now give opportunity to orphans children to be in school and study like others, calling for the fairness in selection of the beneficiaries.
Wako at the same time vowed to uplift the lives of women and youth groups through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund.
" I want to assure the people of Marsabit County that we will work together to make the county great. I want to empower women and youth through groups and those living with disabilities," she said
She called on leaders in the county to set aside their political ambitions and work together for the benefit of the people.
" We cannot afford to continue with disunity. We have to set aside our ambitions and join hands to work for residents," she said.
She advised the county's young people to refrain from being used by politicians and instead asked them to participate in constructive businesses.
She urged residents to shun leaders who preach hatred and only work with those who are willing to spearhead development.
While terming the protests by the Azimio coalition as chaotic and destructive, the county MP said the demos hold no economic significance owing to the large-scale destruction that has been witnessed in the previous protests.
She lauded the county residents for maintaining peace and order, saying the county youths are busy engaging in income-generating activities.
"Let them be advised that there will be no protest in Marsabit county. We have no time for such protests. We are engaged in meaningful activities that will improve our economy," she said. BY THE STAR
