Alert us when building 400 markets, say Lari traders

 

Traders in Lari constituency have asked the government to inform them when construction of the markets President William Ruto promised will start.

This follows reports that the constituency will benefit with four markets, and some of them will be built in existing market locations.

Mary Muthoni, who operators in Kimende market, said information is very important since it would help them organise themselves to move out.

“We do not want to find ourselves in a situation where all our structures are brought down by a tractor since a market is going to be built,” she said.

She spoke yesterday Monday during a public participation held at the market by area MP Mburu Kahangara and officials from the State Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Also present were county Trade director Mary Kirobi and MCAs Nyutu Wamwere (Kijabe) and Josphat Kinyanjui (Lari Kirenga).

Kahangara said the constituency will benefit with four markets out of the 400 markets Ruto aims to build for traders in the country.

The legislator said they will be built at Kagwe, Soko Mjinga, Kimende and Nyambare trading centres.

The MP told residents and traders tat they will be informed of the progress so they may not be caught off-guard.

He also asked the traders to be attending public participation meetings so they get enlightened on what is happening.

“Information is power that lets people know where they are headed to,” he said.

Nyutu said permanent buildings built at the Kimende market will be demolished so that engineers can design the structures comfortably.

Kinyanjui praised Ruto and Kahangara for moving with speed to start holding public participations early.

“The speed at which our MP has moved is an indicator that we really need these markets,” he said.

“We need to move on. Ruto has discovered the heart of Kenyans. No single day passes without millions of Kenyans going to a market.”

Kahangara said empty promises that traders have been told for years will come to an end when the markets are completed.        BY THE STAR
