One person was shot dead with another cut and seven nursing gunshot wounds following day-long protests in Nakuru Town West.

The body of the young man lay uncollected in the Miracle area of Kwa Rhonda area as police engaged protestors in running battles.

Some of the injured people were treated at Mother Kevin Mission Hospital while others were taken to the Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital.

Police started lobbying teargas canisters and shooting in the air to disperse protestors who were barricading the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway as early as 8:30.

Tens of demonstrators blocked the busy highway at Eveready and Total roundabouts while chanting anti-Government slogans.

Other groups of protestors lit bonfires and barricaded roads leading to the Nakuru City Central Business District.

The city centre was deserted and most businesses closed as people opted to stay at home.

Leah Njoki, a trader, said she lost her stock after looters broke into her kiosk during the protest and stole everything.

“It is unfortunate that I will not resume my business after the chaos because I do not have stock plus I have to repair the damage on my kiosk,” she said.

Meanwhile, a woman in the Ngei 1 estate of the Shabab area of Nakuru Town West is reeling in shock after a stray bullet from nowhere struck her house, ricocheted and fell on her front veranda as anti-government protests rocked the area.

The woman who sought anonymity for fear of her family’s security said she was going about her morning chores at 9:00 on Money when she heard a cracking sound on her veranda followed by a cream from her house help who was hanging clothes outside.

“We all came out to check out what could have happened and I noticed a small hole on the wall right above the spot where my sickly husband sits for basking in the morning,” she said.

She added that on further scrutiny, she discovered a bullet on the veranda an indication that it ricocheted, hit a pillar and fell about three yards from the spot it struck.

“I decided to leave the bullet untouched pending collection by the police for investigations,” said the middle-aged woman who also informed the area Community Policing team.

Ngei 1 Community Policing chairman, Hassan Francis said the bullet could have travelled said the bullet could have travelled from a distance.

“The area chief has been informed and the police. We are waiting for them to come to collect the bullet for ballistic analysis,” he said.         BY THE STAR
