An ex-police officer has been arrested in Gilgil after being suspected to have been involved in nine incidents of robbery with violence.
A statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the ex-officer, who served under the General Service Unit, was arrested on Tuesday.
He became a suspect on July 27, 2021, following a robbery at the Matuu Equity branch, Machakos, when five armed robbers stole two AK47 rifles from police officers.
Following investigations, police recovered one of the rifles in a thicket at a private farm in Ruiru, Kiambu County on July 7, 2022.
Then, the farm owner told the police he was clearing a bush when he came across the gun.
In June, four suspected robbers linked to thefts in Machakos, Mombasa and Kwale Counties were shot dead in Kijipwa, Takaungu area in Kilifi County.
They are believed to have been involved in the Matuu bank robbery. Police also recovered an AK47 rifle with seven live bullets.
Before the ex-cop arrest on Tuesday, officers recovered another AK47 at Takaungu in Kilifi before heading to Gilgil.
Investigations conducted so far have linked the ex-officer to nine robberies in Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi and Machakos counties.
