A driver who was involved in the awful Londiani accident that claimed the lives of 55 people has recalled the terrible incident.
Peter Otieno, the driver, claimed to have observed an approaching trailer traveling quickly.
“I had approached the Londiani junction and I saw a trailer that was coming at a very high speed, I was going towards the trailer but I dodged it. The car behind me thought that I was slowing down to buy something and he overtook me and got hit by the trailer and then fell on my car,” he said.
“I saw close to 20 bodies and others which had not been retrieved yet.”
According to witnesses and police, the 6.30 p.m. tragedy happened when a truck lost control and ran over persons walking, conducting business, and matatus that were parked alongside the road.
Tom Odera, the head of the regional police, confirmed that 45 people had passed away and warned that the toll might go higher.
“We have about 45 bodies and the toll may rise,” he said adding many bodies are trapped under a trailer.
Before losing control and veering off the road and striking dozens of hawkers who were busy along the Nakuru-Kericho route, the truck was traveling to Kericho.
During the evening collision, a few matatus suffered severe damage. More than 60 persons were taken by ambulance to various hospitals in Londiani, Kericho, and Nakuru, where they are now receiving care.
