Recover loot, Kabando tells Ruto on ‘Huduma Number fraud’

Former Mukurwe-ini MP Kabando wa Kabando has asked President William Ruto to quit lamenting about the Huduma Number initiative and instead work to recover the lost funds.

Speaking earlier on Friday, Ruto said the initiative carried out by the former administration was a complete fraud.

He said through the initiative, Kenyans lost about Sh15 billion.

“In the next 90 days, we must have a Digital ID. That digital ID has been traumatic for Kenya. We are all aware that there was another phantom project called Huduma Namba that was a complete fraud. We lost almost Sh15 billion and got very little out of it,” he said.

Agreeing with the President’s remarks, Kabando asked him to instead act to recover the lost money, pointing out that he had the power to.

“Rais William Ruto, we agree… True, you were isolated but Raila, Kalonzo, and your CS Mudavadi did the “huduma” errand,” he said.

“Don’t lament; recover the loot. Sir, you aren’t helpless!”

Huduma Namba was a government initiative conducted by the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS) under the leadership of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

It involved collecting biometric data after which the system generates a unique number (Huduma Namba) which would enable one to access government services.

Uhuru launched the Huduma Namba registration drive in Mwala, Machakos County in 2019.   BY THE STAR
