Locals give police officer a thrashing over stolen cow

News

A police officer from Lumakanda Police Station in Lugari Constituency Kakamega County was beaten by a mob for being in possession of an allegedly stolen cow.

Residents found him driving a police vehicle that had cow dung suspected to have been from the stolen cow. The officer had taken the vehicle to a nearby river to clean it, raising suspicion from locals.

The residents demanded answers from the officer after a resident claimed they had spotted him transporting the animal. He pleaded with the residents to spare him and he would show them where the cow was. The cow would later be found in Webuye town. The office claimed he had only been hired to transport the cow and had not yet even been paid.

The officer was beaten until he started bleeding from the mouth and was later rescued by his colleagues. According to residents, they read some mischief when they saw the officer cleaning the vehicle at the river and the vehicle had animal waste.

“We wondered why the car was being cleaned and it had a lot of cow dung. After interrogating the officer, he said he had been hired to take the cow to Webuye town,” said a resident.

Police vehicle compromised

Samson Maiyo said that his cow had been stolen during the night.

“It was stolen when it was raining and I suspect the thieves are being abetted by police,” said Maiyo.

Maiyo demanded answers from Lumakanda Police Station about how a police vehicle was used to transport a stolen cow.

“We want to know a police vehicle is being used to ferry stolen property, and yet the vehicle is for purposes of patrol to beef up security,” said Maiyo.

Lugari Sub-County OCPD Bernard Ngungu said police have launched an investigation into the matter and anyone found culpable will be held responsible, whether an officer or civilian.

“We are investigating the matter even after the officer alleged that he had been hired to transport the cow to Webuye. We want to know who hired him and why he decided to use a State vehicle.”

The OCPD however warned the locals against taking the law into their hands.    BY THE STANDARD MEDIA
