Rogue cab drivers: Senator wants State to look into passenger safety amid uproar

Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa wants the government to outline measures it has put in place to guarantee cab-hailing users’ safety.

The lawmaker, who was seeking a statement from the Standing Committee on National Security, said the government should state policies and regulations cab-hailing companies have implemented to address complaints of insecurity by their users.

“Outline the safety measures put in place by the Cab-hailing companies to ensure thorough vetting of their drivers prior to being onboarded,” he stated.

Uber, Bolt, Little, Uber, Yego and Farasi are among the cab-hailing firms which have been licensed by the National Transport and Safety Authority and currently operating in the country.

Some rogue drivers have been on the spot for harassing passengers while on their trips.

In May, the government pledged to work closely with stakeholders in the cab-hailing business to address challenges in the sector.

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen noted that there is immense headroom for the ride-hailing industry in the country to grow and develop further.

“The role of government in this growth is to create an enabling environment that includes policy, institutional, regulatory and infrastructure review,” he said.

He added that completion has also seen the introduction of ride-hailing services that focus only on women and children and the extension of the services to small towns where large firms do not operate.      BY THE STAR
