Mukumu tragedy: Why ex-principal could be off the hook

 

Administrators of Mukumu Girls could be off the hook in the deaths of students and a teacher as the ongoing investigations are yet to find them liable for negligence.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu said the multiagency team probing the death are yet to nail any person for any criminal offence to warrant prosecution.

“So far, we did not have any report which made it culpable for us to pin down any given individual, particularly on negligence level where we would have said here there is a criminal offence which has been committed by such and such an individual,” Machogu said.

“Therefore, that particular individual should be taken to court because among other people that we had in that multi-agency team were CID officers.”

The revelation is a big relief to the former principal Fridah Ndolo who has been on the spot over the deaths of three students and a teacher due to the alleged consummation of food.

“So, the reports I have so far gotten from that particular team do not indicate that any induvial was criminally liable to warrant being taken to court,” he said.

Machogu was responding to a question by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale on whether the government was considering pressing charges on the ex-principal and the county director of education for alleged negligence.

“Can the minister inform us whether he’s going to take any action against the director, against the former principal for negligence that led to the death of our children?” Khalwale posed.

The CS said that Ndolo, who has since been removed from the school, has been posted in the office of the provisional director awaiting retirement in six months.      BY THE STAR
