Crimes of the week: Irate residents storm police station as student falls to death

Police are investigating the source of a consignment of bhang that was destined for Bahrain disguised as shower curtains.

The four kilos of the cannabis sativa had been hidden in 25 pieces of shower curtains and was being sent as cargo through an international courier company.

Police at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport said they were at the weekend tipped off the cargo and visited the warehouse where they established it had been sent from the Kitengela area.

The cargo had been sent by a person who is yet to be identified, police said.

Student falls to death 

Police are investigating an incident in which a student at the Kenya Institute of Management died after falling from the eighth floor of a building in Gacharage village, Kiambu County.

The woman was identified as Catherine Njeri. 

She had visited her friend for a party at their apartment last Sunday before tragedy struck while she was on the rooftop with the friend’s boyfriend.

Five suspects have so far been detained in connection with her death.

Police have detained them for 10 days to conclude investigations into the incident.

Goons kill at a funeral 

Police are hunting down a gang that attacked a funeral meeting in a village in Malindi and killed a 70-year-old man.

The gang was armed with crude weapons when they struck and slashed those present indiscriminately prompting them to scamper for safety.

The motive of the attack is yet to be known, police said.

Kenyan sentenced in DRC 

A court in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) sentenced Kenyan terror suspect Salim Mohammed, alias Chotora or Turki Salim to death.

His lawyer Yusuf Ababukar said he was sentenced to death by hanging after undergoing trial for the murder of a Congolese soldier in March.

The lawyer said he had requested the Congolese government to supply his family with the judgment to enable them to appeal the sentence.

Suspected thug killed 

A suspected thug was shot and killed in a botched robbery in Kasarani area, Nairobi.

Police said they were alerted about suspects who were attacking and robbing pedestrians in the Roysambu area before they laid an ambush.

It was then the team confronted two suspects as they attacked and robbed female pedestrians of their valuables.

They shot and killed one suspect while his accomplice managed to escape on foot, police said.

Villagers attack the police station

At least 12 police officers were injured when a group of protesters raided a police station in Isebania Township near the Kenya-Tanzania border.

The locals were protesting the shooting and killing of businessman Moses Mwangi in the area.

Police said Mwangi had been killed by unknown people in an attack. The motive of the killing is yet to be known.

Robbers arrested

Two suspects believed to be behind the recent armed attacks on civilians in Kakamega, Vihiga and Uasin Gishu counties have been arrested in a police operation.

Detectives from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau arrested the suspects in Kakamega.

This was after a chase that ended at river Lwatingu where the main suspect was arrested before he jumped into the river, to evade justice.   BY THE STAR
