Kenyan man caught in a dress pretending to be woman at chess tournament
A Kenyan man was caught pretending to be a woman at the Kenya Open Chess Championship in Nairobi but was busted only after he had beat former national champion Gloria Jumba (rated 1487) and Ugandan top player Ampaira Shakira (rated 1702).
The man who had registered under the name Millicent Awuor had raised suspicion due to his odd behaviour (he refused to speak to anyone during the registration process or after the matches and from his gait (he walked like a man) and the fact that the had worn shoes popular with men (Vans sneakers).
When questioned about why he had tried to fraudulently enter and compete in the tournament, the Kenyan man said that it was because he was chasing the bag and financial difficulties led him to make the decision to go down this route. There are 10 prizes in the women’s section, which has a first prize of 500,000 Kenyan Shillings ($3,815). The open section, where the first prize is one million Kenyan Shillings ($7,630), attracted seven international grandmasters.
