Former Africa Boxing Union champion Daniel Wanyonyi has dared Tanzania’s Karim “Mtu Kazi” Mandonga to a rematch, saying he has now sharpened his talons well enough to tear him into smithereens.
Wanyonyi made the remarks after making light of Ugandan opponent Charles Kakande in a six-round non-title middleweight bout at the Moi Stadium Kasarani Gymnasium, Nairobi on Saturday night.
It took Wanyonyi less than a minute to send Kakande sprawling on the cold floor forcing the referee Emmanuel Mlundwa to effect the eight seconds stand count.
Later, as the home crowd erupted in jubilant cheers, Wanyonyi unleashed another lethal hook that sent Kakande tumbling to the ground, prompting the referee to stop the fight.
“I want to first apologise to my opponent because he is still trying to figure out what hit him so hard,” wanyonyi said, sending the crowd into a fit of laughter.
“This is the real Wanyonyi. I think the time is now ripe for them to bring Mandonga to the ring for thorough hiding. I’m prepared to impart some wisdom to him. Bring the joker now,” Wanyonyi said with a wry smile.
The boxer claimed he was prepared to atone for his earlier humiliation at the KICC in Nairobi on January 14 when Mandonga rendered him inedible with a technical knockout in the sixth round.
“I have returned, and I want Mandonga to know that a train wreck is about to happen very soon. Please remind him to prepare for a rematch. When I last fell to him, I was rusty. With Covid-19 complicating things, I had just returned to training after taking a break for almost four years,” said Wanyonyi.
Mandonga, however, quickly responded, saying he was prepared to send Wanyonyi back to his maker and dared the man to back up his words up and face him again.
The Tanzanian celebrity pugilist spoke after outplaying Uganda’s Kenneth Lukyamuzi in a split decision at the Moi Stadium, Kasarani Gymnasium to claim the vacant regional Pugilistic Syndicate of Tanzania (PST) light heavyweight title.
