Equity Bank issues major tip to clients after fraud allegations

Kenyans took to Twitter after numerous reported fraudulent activities took place in relation to Equity Bank. 

A number of victims confided in Kimuzi, a blogger who opened up a dialogue on Twitter for them to air their grievances.

The affected parties sent private messages, attaching evidence of clients getting back negative amounts in their accounts. 

“How safe are the clients money in your bank? Why am I getting a negative 600k in my account, was Equity hacked or something?” Mansa Musa, one of the victims said.

On 4th February 2023, a victim received a call from someone claiming to be an Equity employee, guiding her on various instructions that led to her being swindled up to Ksh 240,000.

On calling the bank’s customer care service desk, they stated that they could not be of any help.

“I thought this was a joke until I woke up this morning and found it has actually happened to me,” another victim, Isaac Mbugua said.

“When I say I do not do mobile banking one would think I am either a laggard or resistant to change, but I have seen these mobile banking do more harm than good. The greatest evil is that it is prone to hacking by anyone from anywhere,” a Miss Kimutai said. 

Kenyans are vexed seeing that the company is not taking any measures to resolve the problems. 

But Equity Bank has now taken it upon itself to warn its customers of the risks online banking has while using public WIFI.

In addition, the bank requested one not share their pin, password, or OTP, neither should they receive any calls from any number other than 0763000000 in regards to their banking details. 

“We urge all our customers to remain alert and vigilant in combating fraud by following tips,” said the lender in a notice.

“Do not use public WiFi to do your online or mobile banking,” said the lender in a notice.
