Go slow! Gachagua warns Sakaja over matatu impasse
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has warned Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on plans to eject matatus from Nairobi CBD.
Speaking on Monday, Gachagua said that the removal of matatus from the CBD will disrupt business.
"I shall sit down with Sakaja because we are the ones who elected him. We must first discuss on anything which can disrupt business in Nairobi. We do not need a lot of speed, go slow," he said.
Gachagua said that he will have a conversation with Sakaja on the way forward.
This is after Sakaja directed that the long-distance matatus should move to Green Park terminus effectively.
The long-distance matatus however got a reprieve after the High court temporarily stopped their move.
However, Sakaja said that matatus have not been removed from the CBD.
While addressing the court, he said, matatus can pick up passengers in the CBD but they will drop them off at the Green Park terminus.
He said he has had meetings with Sacco officials and they have all agreed to drop the passengers at the new terminus.
The DP lauded Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika for allowing Public Service Vehicles back into the CBD after a two years ban.
The access will be granted before Christmas day for 18 months when the construction of the modern matatu park will have been completed.
"I campaigned on the platform of uplifting hustlers' businesses, the ban had affected businesses because Nakuru is a transport and business hub," Kihika said.
"Why should you allow passenger vehicles carrying one passenger into the CBD but ban a matatu with 15 passengers, does it make sense?"
The governor however gave procedures to be followed to maintain law and order. BY THE STAR
