Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga has defended Trade CS Moses Kuria on the importation of maize.
He said the CS is right to import maize to help with food shortage in the country.
“The CS is right to bring in the 11 million bags, if it can go to areas where people are dying,” Klasinga said on Wednesday.
“If you want to impeach the minister for bringing in maize, go and write the impeachment report from the ground where people are dying.”
The legislator said Kenyans are already consuming GMO by eating popcorn and yellow maize.
“The popcorn we consume from the market is GMO. These are the things we need to tell the truth about,” he said.
This comes at a time when Kenyans have different views on GMO.
A section of MPs from Rift Valley have since threatened to impeach Kuria over the importation of duty-free maize as farmers are anticipating a bumper harvest.
Led by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, the MPs on Tuesday said the Cabinet has not approved any maize importation.
The MPs protested the importation of maize, demanding that the Trade ministry halts the process immediately.
Kuria had on Monday said a legal notice for the importation of Genetically Modified Maize by millers was due this week.
However, before the state would give legal authority for the importation of maize, a ship docked at the port of Mombasa. BY THE STAR
