Kanu party leader Gideon Moi has withdrawn his candidature from the East African Legislative Assembly race.
In a statement on Tuesday, One Kenya Alliance spokesperson Fred Okango said Moi had instead decided to hand the opportunity to other candidates.
“Following the initial application by Hon. Gideon Moi and his nomination to the position of EALA member of Parliament, Hon. Moi would like to thank KANU,OKA and Azimio One Kenya Coalition for the opportunity and trust,” he said.
“He wishes them the best of luck in their endeavours.”
The former Baringo senator was one of the candidates who had been fronted by his party for the positions, alongside secretary general Nick Salat, among others.
Moi had presented his candidature despite the seats having been reserved for UDA, ODM, Wiper and Jubilee parties.
On Wednesday, the Orange Democratic Movement party narrowed down its list of EALA nominees to six.
The six include Business man Suleiman Shahbal, Mohamed Diriye, Winnie Odinga, Timothy Bosire, Beatrice Askul, and Justus Kizito.
Kenya has nine seats up for grabs at the East African Legislative Assembly. Five of the nine will go the Kenya Kwanza coalition while four will go to the Azimio la Umoja coalition.
From the four ODM is expected to have two seats while other affiliate parties; Jubilee and Wiper will each get a seat.
President William Ruto’s UDA party also sent a shortlist of 15 names to Parliament for the five EALA slots.
The names include the former Secretary General of Ruto’s defunct United Republic Party (URP) Fred Muteti and ex-Mombasa senator Hassan Omar.
Others on the list include former nominated MP David Sankok, former Nandi Woman Representative Zipporah Kering and Anne Too.
Rebecca Lowoiya, Godfrey Maina, Okengo Nyambane, Falhadha Iman, Abdikadir Aden, Jonas Kuko, Kubai Iringo, Lilian Cheptoo, Yasser Bajaber, Salim Mohammed are also on the list.
The formula for arriving at the seats entitled for parties includes dividing the number of seats won in the National Assembly by the total number of MPs(349) and then multiplying by the EALA slots(9). BY THE STAR
