Trade CS Moses Kuria has said the Kenya Kwanza government will complete the stalled Naromoru and Karemenu mega dams in Kieni, Nyeri county.
He said the dams are a long-term solution to the biting drought.
The CS spoke in Nyeri where he was disbursing relief food to Kieni residents.
He said the two dams will facilitate irrigation farming.
“We will revive the dams on a private-public partnership, which has now been transferred to my ministry. Before then, we are going to work with leaders to have a framework of the community,” Kuria said.
The CS said the collaboration will bring in private investors.
“This project will serve the people of Nyeri, Laikipia and Nyandarua. My estimation is within the next 12 months, Kieni will be self-sufficient,” he said.
The move comes at a time when President William Ruto led the Kenyan delegation to the 27th Conference of the Parties on Sunday.
He will also be attending the annual conference as the chairman of the committee of African Heads of State and Government on climate change.
He will deliver the Kenyan national statement and a statement on behalf of Africa.
This event comes at a time of interlocking crises including energy and food insecurity, and in the midst of the worst drought in 40 years affecting Kenya and the Horn of Africa.
The Head of State is expected to make a strong case for Kenya and Africa, with African nations still bearing the brunt of the impacts of emissions from the developed world. BY DAILY NATION
