Protesters light bonfire on Mwingi road over poll loss

Chaos rocked Kamuwongo Market in Mwingi North constituency in Kitui county on Monday as supporters of rival teams clashed.

Supporters of Muema Nduku who lost the Kyuso ward MCA seat protested and lit a bonfire on the Kyuso-Mwingi road.

The irate residents led by the aggrieved election loser, lit the fire making it impossible for vehicles to pass.

They chanted haki yetu, haki yetu ya kura.

The irate residents, most of them women, carried placards with messages of praise for Muema with others demanding Justice.

They claimed that their candidate was rigged out in favour of Wiper’s John Munyoki Mwinzi who was declared the winner.

As Muema and his adherents were speaking to the press next to burning tyres at the Kamuwongo bridge, a police land cruiser pick-up arrived with armed police officers who asked the demonstrators to disperse to no avail.

The security officers were then forced to lob teargas canisters at the protesters who scattered before regrouping as they danced and sang praises of Muema.

But Muema who was at some point carried shoulder high managed to convince his supporters to leave the scene.   BY THE STAR
