At least 63 candidates sitting for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education and a supervisor spent the night in police custody on Tuesday after they were arrested over KCSE exam malpractice.
The police arrested the candidates and the supervisor in two separate examination centres within the Kakuma refugee camp in Turkana West Sub County.
Turkana County Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi confirmed the arrest.
Ndanyi said 25 candidates were arrested at Somali Bantu Secondary School and 38 at Greenlight Secondary School.
The g3 are not Kenyan students but refugees.
He said the supervisor identified as Edward Ekodor Lochole was arrested and several phones confiscated from candidates at Greenlight Secondary School.
“The preferred charges against candidates and the supervisor were examination malpractices and an additional of the negligence of duty for the supervisor,” Ndanyi said.
He said the candidates were released on a free bond so that they sit for the Wednesday morning paper while the supervisor was released on cash bail.
“The County security team committee and county officials from the Ministry of Education are already in the school to carry out thorough investigations for the matter,” he said.
Ndanyi said the students will continue sitting for the exams as they await recommendations from the Ministry of Education.
Education CS George Magoha has decried the use of phones by candidates in cheating during examination tests.
Magoha spoke on Tuesday at Westlands DCC’s office when he oversaw the distribution of exam papers.
“In terms of ensuring that all children have equal opportunities, we are more worried about cellphones….in Kakuma we found phones almost equivalent to the number of students taking their exams,” he said. BY THE STAR
