Reject plan to revive BBI, William Ruto tells his supporters

Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday asked Kenyans to 'blacklist' proponents of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) in the 2022 polls.

Dr Ruto, who took his vote hunting mission to Samburu County after addressing rallies in Nakuru, labelled the BBI proponents as "enemies of the people."

Dr Ruto dismissed fresh attempts by proponents of the BBI to revive the push for constitutional changes saying it is not a priority at the moment.

The DP appeared to be reacting to recent remarks by President Uhuru Kenyatta during Jamhuri Day celebrations that “BBI is a deferred dream."

Dr Ruto asked Kenyans to kick leaders who voted in support of the BBI Constitutional Amendment Bill 2020 from the National Assembly, Senate and county assemblies.

Unemployment

"Viongozi wote ambao walipiga yes kwa BBI ni maadui wa wakenya na msiwachague kusimamia hata cattle dips. (All leaders who voted for the BBI constitutional amendment bill are enemies of Kenyans and should not be elected to head even cattle dips)," Dr Ruto said on Saturday in Maralal town.

He said that the government's priority should be improving the economy and addressing the unemployment crisis among the youth.

“Kenyans do not need to be told on the BBI. We want to know how we can revive the economy by empowering the youth, women and small business people.”

He was accompanied by MPs Aden Duale (Garissa Township), Kimani Ichungwa (Kikuyu), Rigathi Gachagua (Mathira), Kimani Ngunjiri (Bahati) and a host of local leaders led by Senator Steve Lelegwe.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on December 12 told Kenyans that the BBI constitutional amendment bill is a dream deferred "because the country cannot survive on ethnic majority."

Dr Ruto dismissed the recent talks on the BBI saying that the BBI process was the most fraudulent and deceitful process ever undertaken in Kenya since independence.

Failed promises

He also blamed ODM leader Raila Odinga over the failed Big Four promises by the Jubilee government. The DP claimed that all was well planned until Mr Odinga ‘hijacked’ the government’s plan with the introduction of the BBI.

Big Four

“Everything was in plan to deliver the Big Four Agenda until Mr Odinga came into government. He initiated the BBI and it is at this point that the government agenda was disrupted," he said.

He urged the youth to support his presidential bid in 2022 elections to enable him to revive the Big Four Agenda through his bottom-up economic model.

He also took a swipe at his other challengers for the country’s top seat, saying although they had held higher positions in government, they had no development record to match his.

He said that his party UDA enjoys huge support from over 160 elected MPs countrywide.

“We have moved out of the era of regional and tribal political formations. I urge you to support national parties like UDA which has a backing of 160 MPs across the country," he said.

He told his supporters that the bottom-up economic model offers a solution to addressing poverty.    BY DAILY NATION
