Rains force changes to Guru Nanak Rally

Recent rains have forced the organisers of this weekend’s KCB Guru Nanak Rally to change the competition programme, altering part of the route and other aspects.

While documentation and scrutineering of the rally cars will remain at the Sikh Union Club of Nairobi, the start and finish of the competition will now move to Il Bisil where the race starts at 9am on Saturday.

Il Bisil will host two competitive stages that will be done twice.

The longest stage will be 60 kilometres with the total competitive distance about 150 kilometres.

The competition was set for the Athi River area before the rains interrupted the organisers’ plans.

Onkar Kalsi, the Clerk of the Course for this final round of the Kenya National Rally Championship series, confirmed the new plans.

‘’The rally will now start from Il Bisil while documentation and scrutineering of the rally cars will be done at the Sikh Union Club. Rains have forced us to change the plans though everything else is in its place,’’ Kalsi told Nation Sport.

Meanwhile, Surinder Thatthi will leave for Paris this weekend in readiness for the International Automobile Federation (FIA) elections to be held next week.

Thatthi, one of Kenya’s leading rally organisers, will be looking for the post of FIA Vice President representing the African continent under the team of Graham Stocker who is vying for the presidency of the FIA, the world’s motorsports governing body.

The current FIA President, Frenchman Jean Todt, completes his term this year after having served FIA for the last three terms of four years each.

“I will be leaving this weekend for France to prepare for the major elections under Graham Stocker. It has been a busy time but I’m hoping to secure the post of the Vice President,’’ Thatthi told Nation Sport.

The Vice President’s post is shared among seven candidates representing different regions across the globe.

Thatthi is the current Vice President for Africa. Mohamed Ben Sulayem from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is opposing British barrister Stocker in the coming elections.

Sulayem is the current Deputy President of the representing Arab Emirates.    BY DAILY NATION
