Police in Laare hunt for officer over theft of gambling machines
Police in Igembe, Meru County, are looking for an officer suspected of breaking into Laare deputy OCS’s office and stealing two gambling machines which had been seized in a crackdown.
The items, which had an unknown amount of money in them, were found inside the Administration Police officer’s house situated about 400 metres from the scene of crime.
The offense, which is suspected to have occurred on the night of Jamhuri Day, was booked as a felony under the category of office break-in.
Laare Deputy OCS Stephen Savali reported that he had left his office securely locked around 7pm but found it broken into when he reported to work the following day.
Money missing
He discovered that the two gambling machines, which had an unknown amount of money, were missing.
Following a frantic search, police officers received a tip-off from a member of the public that the AP corporal had been spotted carrying the stolen machines.
A team of officers from the DCI led by station commander Ezra Sambu went to the officer’s house but found it locked.
On the run
The officer, identified as Samuel Mwenda, was summoned to present himself to his seniors but he declined.
Police officers broke into the house and recovered the stolen items which had been vandalised and the money they contained stolen.
Scene of crime officers processed the office and the house where the items were found.
Igembe North police boss Mbatian Kantai said the officer was on the run following the incident but was being pursued.
