EACC raises red flag over Kananu DG pick Paul Mutungi

Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu has suffered a fresh blow in her quest to fill the deputy governor position after the anti-graft watchdog rejected her nominee, Paul Mutungi.

Mr Mutungi, who is the current City Hall Chief of Staff, was nominated last month before being vetted and approved by the Nairobi County Assembly.

However, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), in a letter to Ms Kananu and the Assembly, said Mr Mutungi has integrity issues.

EACC has cited pending graft cases in court, thereby making him unfit to hold office in accordance with Chapter Six of the Constitution.

In the letter, EACC boss Twalib Mbarak points out that he was charged at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court with graft offences allegedly committed in Nairobi County government, with the matter still pending.

The offences include unlawful acquisition of public property and money laundering.

This is in addition to conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption and dealing with suspect property, EACC said.

“In view of the above, the Commission objects to the nomination of Mr Mutungi as the deputy governor and advises the assembly and the governor to reconsider the nomination,” said the letter.   BY DAILY NATION
